Over-the-Counter Eye Drops for Dogs: What's Safe and What's Not | South Africa Guide

Over-the-counter eye drops for dogs: close-up of a dog's eye and face before a gentle daily eye rinse

What counts as an over-the-counter eye drop for dogs

The eye-care shelf in any pharmacy worldwide holds four categories: sterile eyewash, lubricating drops, contact lens solutions, and "gets-the-red-out" redness relievers. Only the first two have a defensible role in a dog's eye, and only a narrow, temporary one.

If you would rather keep a bottle made for a dog's eye than improvise with a human one, that is the practical version of this first category. Our non-medicated eye drops for dogs are built to that spec — sterile, filtered to 10 microns, buffered to pH 7.0–7.2 and isotonic so they don't sting — and they exist to flush and soothe an otherwise healthy eye, not to treat one.

The three tiers of over-the-counter eye drops for dogs

Sterile saline and lubricants: the honest version

Sterile saline eyewash flushes dust, pollen or shampoo off an eye that is otherwise intact. It is a rinse, not a therapy — we covered the technique in our guide to saline solution for dogs' eyes.

Unmedicated lubricants add moisture when an eye is mildly, temporarily dry. What they cannot do is fix the cause. Dry eye — keratoconjunctivitis sicca — affected 0.40% of 363,898 dogs in a large primary-care study, with American Cocker Spaniels, English Bulldogs, Pugs and Lhasa Apsos at markedly higher odds (O'Neill 2021). It is usually lifelong and treated with prescription cyclosporine or tacrolimus, which act on tear production. Artificial tears sit on top of that problem — see our guide to dry eye in dogs.

How long a lubricant actually stays on the eye

Here is the detail that explains why one product feels like it "works" and another doesn't. A 2023 fluorophotometry study measured median precorneal retention in healthy Beagles:

Formulation Median time on the eye
Ophthalmic ointment 40 minutes
Polyethylene glycol drop (Systane Ultra) 35 minutes
0.25% hyaluronate drop (I-Drop Vet Plus) 30 minutes
0.25% hyaluronate gel (Optixcare Eye Lube Plus) 25 minutes
1.4% polyvinyl alcohol solution 10 minutes

Formulation, not marketing, decides how often you re-apply — and our review of Optixcare for dogs covers where that shelf staple fits. Research in dogs with dry eye found hyaluronate drops improved conjunctival redness and discomfort scores over four weeks, but the small rise in tear production was not clinically significant (Williams 2012). Comfort, yes. Cure, no.

Why steroid drops are the most dangerous thing in the cupboard

If you take one paragraph from this article, take this one. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, corticosteroids are contraindicated both topically and systemically when a corneal ulcer is present: glucocorticoids inhibit epithelial regeneration and can augment the action of collagenase, leading to a melting corneal ulcer. Merck advises staining the cornea with fluorescein before any steroid drop is used — a test only a veterinarian can perform. Topical NSAID drops carry the same warning.

Ulcers are not rare, and they hide behind ordinary-looking symptoms. In a study of 104,233 dogs in primary care, brachycephalic breeds had roughly 11 times the odds of corneal ulcerative disease compared with crossbreds, 5.42% of Pugs were affected in a single year, and pain was recorded in 46.2% of cases (O'Neill 2017). A squinting dog is not a candidate for whatever is in the medicine cabinet — see our explainer on dog eye ulcer signs and urgency.

Red flags: put the bottle down and call your veterinarian

  • Squinting, blinking hard or holding the eye shut — pain, and a common sign of ulceration.
  • Pawing at the face, or rubbing it along furniture.
  • Thick yellow or green discharge, or discharge that returns within hours of cleaning.
  • A cloudy, hazy or bluish cornea, or a visibly enlarged eye.
  • Redness lasting more than 24 hours, or any redness with pain — the differential behind why your dog's eyes are red runs from mild allergies to glaucoma.
  • Any change in vision, or a visible injury.

Persistent discharge and swelling also fit the pattern of infection — the warning signs of a dog eye infection are worth knowing before you need them. Any veterinarian can run a fluorescein stain and a Schirmer tear test in minutes; guessing at home costs more.

Where daily hygiene fits — and where it doesn't

Most of what collects in a healthy dog's eye corner is ordinary debris, and routine cleaning prevents a good deal of irritation. That is hygiene, not medicine. Our sterile dog eye drops are built to that standard: ophthalmic-grade, filtered to 10 microns, buffered to pH 7.0–7.2 and formulated isotonic so they don't sting, with 0.05% sodium hyaluronate plus aloe, chamomile and panthenol, and no bleach, alcohol or fragrance. They rinse and soothe; they do not treat an infection, an ulcer or dry eye. Our eye and vision support drops for dogs are likewise a plant-based daily supplement, not a medicated drop.

For the routine itself, our method to safely clean your dog's eyes at home and the broader complete guide to dog eye health cover the rest, alongside our full range of dog eye drops. Used sensibly, over-the-counter eye drops for dogs are a comfort measure between the shelf and the clinic — never a replacement for it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best over-the-counter eye drop for dogs?

A sterile, non-medicated rinse formulated for canine eyes is the safest choice, because it removes the guesswork of using a human product off-label. Our Pure Majesty Pets Dog Eye Drops are ophthalmic-grade, filtered to 10 microns, buffered to pH 7.0–7.2 and isotonic, with 0.05% sodium hyaluronate, aloe, chamomile and panthenol, and no bleach, alcohol or fragrance. They are a hygiene product for a healthy, comfortable eye — not a treatment for infection, ulcers or dry eye.

Can I use human eye drops on my dog?

Plain, single-ingredient sterile saline or unmedicated artificial tears are commonly used off-label in dogs — ask your veterinarian first. Avoid anything labelled redness relief, allergy, antihistamine, decongestant or medicated, and never invent a dosing schedule for a human product.

Is Visine safe for dogs?

Are there any over-the-counter antibiotic eye drops for dogs?

Can I use contact lens solution to rinse my dog's eye?

No. The ACVO advises specifically against it. Multipurpose disinfecting and hydrogen-peroxide systems contain agents meant to clean a lens, not to contact living tissue. Plain sterile saline eyewash is a different product — check the label reads saline only.

How long can I use lubricating drops before seeing a vet?

Treat 24 to 48 hours as the outer limit for mild, painless irritation in an otherwise bright, comfortable dog. Any pain, any discharge that thickens or changes colour, or no improvement in that window means a veterinary exam rather than another bottle.
